MW Group Proposes Senior Living Facility in Honolulu

Honolulu-based real estate developer MW Group presented a proposal to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents on Thursday for a new Plaza Assisted Living facility. The project would be situated near Diamond Head and Kapiolani Community College along Makapuu Avenue, aiming to serve the growing senior population in the area.

The Board of Regents expressed enthusiasm for the project’s potential to enhance senior living options but requested further review by a committee. This due diligence ensures the project aligns perfectly with the University’s vision for the land.

Previously, the property served a healthcare purpose, housing a medical ward and training center for Leahi Hospital.

Waikiki to Welcome First Capsule Hotel

Island travelers seeking a comfortable and budget-friendly stay in Waikiki will soon have a brand new option – capsule hotels. The popular Japanese company, First Cabin, is bringing their unique hotel concept to Hawaii for the very first time, setting up shop in Waikiki.

First Cabin offers compact rooms modeled after airplane first-class cabins. The Waikiki Business Plaza on Kalakaua Avenue will undergo a $2.75 million renovation to accommodate these innovative units. This marks Waikiki’s foray into the capsule hotel trend, offering a fresh take on budget-friendly accommodations.

The concept of capsule hotels originated in Osaka, Japan, during the 1970s. These highly functional units are typically designed for sleeping and feature a compact size. Typically designed primarily as just a small sleeping space, the capsules offer a comfortable and secure sleeping environment, usually at an affordable price. First Cabin’s design looks to offer more space than a typical capsule hotel, with more premium features.
